FC Barcelona, Real Madrid or Atlético Madrid. These are all football clubs in Spain that are currently successful and are currently playing in the Spanish Primera División called La Liga, the Spanish top division. But who is really the most successful in the history of Spanish club football?

Measured by titles such as the championship, Copa del Rey, the Spanish Super Cup, but also international titles such as the Champions League or Europa League, we have compiled the top 10 most successful football clubs in Spain. One or the other team will surprise many, but read for yourself.

10. RCD Espanyol Barcelona

The club was founded almost 120 years ago on October 28, 1900 as Reial Club Deportiu Espanyol de Barcelona. RCD Espanyol is based in Barcelona, Catalonia and is also known by its nickname Periquitos or the "Parakeets".

RCD Espanyol currently uses the 40,500 capacity Estadi Cornellà-El Prat as their home stadium. The club reached the UEFA Cup final twice, in 1988 and 2007. RCD Espanyol takes on FC Barcelona in the 'Derbi barceloní'. They have won the Spanish championship four times in their history. In the 2020/21 season they played in the second Spanish division but were promoted back to La Liga at the end of the season.

9. Real Sociedad (San Sebastian)

The Spanish football club Real Sociedad has won a total of 5 national and international titles in its club history. They now occupy ninth place in our list of the top 10 most successful Spanish football clubs of all time. The club was founded almost 111 years ago on September 7, 1909 as Real Sociedad de Fútbol.

Real Sociedad is based in the city of San Sebastián in the Basque Country and is also known by the nickname Txuriurdin or "The White and Blue". Real Sociedad currently uses the 32,200 capacity Anoeta Stadium as their home ground.

They have won a total of 2 La Liga titles and 2 Copa del Rey trophies so far. Real Sociedad has achieved a Supercopa de España title in the 2021/22 football season.

8. Deportivo La Coruna

The Spanish football club Deportivo has won a total of 6 national and international titles in its club history. They now occupy eighth place in our list of the top 10 most successful Spanish football clubs of all time.

The club was founded almost 113 years ago on March 2, 1906 as Real Club Deportivo de La Coruña. Deportivo is based in the Galician city of A Coruña and is also known by its nickname Brancoazuis or the "Blue and White".

The club has been in the top half of the La Liga table in 16 of the last 19 seasons. Deportivo have used the 34,600 capacity Riazor Stadium as their home ground since 1944. To date, they have won a total of 1 La Liga title and 2 Copa del Rey trophies. Deportivo have achieved 3 Supercopa de España titles in the 2021/22 football season.

 

7. Real Zaragoza

The Spanish football club Real Zaragoza has won a total of 9 national and international titles in its club history. They now occupy seventh place in our list of the top 10 most successful Spanish football clubs of all time. The club is based in Zaragoza, Aragon and was founded around 89 years ago in 1932.

Real Zaragoza is also known by its nickname Los Maños or 'The Aragonese'. The club currently plays in the Segunda División and uses 34,596 players La Romareda as their home ground. They have won a total of 6 Copa del Rey trophies so far. Real Zaragoza has achieved a Supercopa de España and a UEFA Cup Winners' Cup from the 2021/22 football season. Real Zaragoza currently plays in the Segunda División.

They now occupy sixth place in our list of the top 10 most successful Spanish football clubs of all time. The club is based in Seville and was founded around 129 years ago on January 25, 1890 as Sevilla Football Club.
Seville is also known by its nickname Los Rojiblancos or the "Red and Whites". They have won a total of 1 La Liga title and 5 Copa del Rey trophies so far. Sevilla has achieved one Supercopa de España and five UEFA Europa Leagues as of the 2021/22 football season. Sevilla have also reached the UEFA Super Cup once since their inception. The club's fans also look forward to the big city derby against Real Betis (Seville) every year.

The club was founded over 100 years ago on March 18, 1919. The fans also call Valencia by its nickname Els Taronges or The Oranges. They have won a total of 6 La Liga titles and 8 Copa del Rey trophies so far.

Valencia have achieved a Supercopa de España and a UEFA Cup Winners' Cup title from the 2021/22 football season. Valencia have also reached the UEFA Europa League once, the UEFA Super Cup twice and the UEFA Intertoto Cup once since their inception. The club has 2 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in its portfolio.

4. Atlético Madrid

The Spanish football club Atlético Madrid has won a total of 31 national and international titles in its club history. They now occupy fourth place in our list of the top 10 most successful Spanish football clubs of all time. The club was founded around 116 years ago on April 26, 1903 in Madrid.

Since September 16, 2017, Atlético has been playing in the 68,456-seat Wanda Metropolitano Stadium. Before that, the Madrilenians played at the Vicente Calderón Stadium.

They have won a total of 11 La Liga titles and 10 Copa del Rey trophies so far. The last championship title was won in the past 2021/22 season. Atlético Madrid have won 2 Supercopa de España and one UEFA Cup Winners' Cup from the 2021/22 football season. Atlético Madrid have also reached the UEFA Europa League three times, the UEFA Super Cup three times and the Intercontinental Cup once since their inception.

3. Athletic Bilbao

The Spanish football club Athletic Club Bilbao has won a total of 34 national and international titles in its club history. They now occupy third place in our list of the top 10 most successful Spanish football clubs of all time. The club is based in the beautiful city of Bilbao in the Basque Country. Athletic Bilbao was founded around 123 years ago in 1898 and plays at the Estadio de San Mamés.

Athletic Bilbao fans also called Los Leones or the "Lions". The club is one of the only three clubs never to have been relegated from La Liga. They have won a total of 8 La Liga titles and 23 Copa del Rey trophies so far. Athletic Bilbao has achieved 2 Supercopa de España titles in the 2021/22 football season.

The Spanish Football Club Barcelona has won a total of 94 national and international titles in its club history. They now occupy second place in our list of the top 10 most successful Spanish football clubs of all time. The club was founded around 123 years ago on November 29, 1899 as Futbol Club Barcelona. FCB will play their home game in the world-famous Camp Nou stadium, which, after its renovation, should have a capacity of 105,000 spectators from 2022.
They have won a total of 26 titles and 31 Copa del Rey trophies so far. Barcelona have achieved 13 Supercopa de España and two Copa de la Liga titles in the 2021/22 football season.

The club have won 5 UEFA Champions League titles and 4 UEFA Cup winners to date. Barcelona have also won the UEFA Super Cup five times, the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup three times and the FIFA Club World Cup title three times since their inception.

In the legendary El Clásico, Barcelona's ball magicians meet their biggest rivals Real Madrid at least twice a year.

They also now occupy the top spot in our list of the top 10 most successful Spanish football clubs of all time. Real Madrid was founded almost 119 years ago on March 6, 1902. The Estadio Santiago Bernabéu is currently being renovated. However, the capacity will not change much with around 81,000 seats.

To date, they have won a total of 34 La Liga titles and 19 Copa del Rey trophies. Real Madrid have achieved eleven Supercopa de España and one Copa de la Liga titles in the 2021/22 football season. The club have won 13 UEFA Champions League titles and 2 UEFA Europa League titles to date. One of them, Real Madrid, has won the UEFA Super Cup four times, the Intercontinental Cup three times and the FIFA Club World Cup four times since its inception.
